It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, without defilement thou gavest birth to God the Word. True Theotokos, we magnify thee.
Hymn to the Theotokos (Megalinaria)
O most holy Lady Theotokos, light of my darkened soul, my hope, my protection, my refuge, my consolation, and my joy: I thank thee, for thou hast enabled me, who am unworthy, to be a partaker of the most pure Body and precious Blood of thy Son and our God.
Entreat Him, Who was born of thee, O my Lady, that He may grant me to pass the remainder of my life in peace and repentance, and that I may sing to thee with thanksgiving:
Rejoice, O Full of Grace! The Lord is with thee! Rejoice, O Undefiled Mother! Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded!
Beneath Thy Compassion (Ancient Prayer)
Beneath thy compassion we take refuge, O Theotokos. Do not despise our petitions in time of trouble, but rescue us from dangers, O only Pure, only Blessed One.
Dating from the 3rd century, this is one of the oldest known prayers to the Theotokos, found on an Egyptian papyrus fragment. It remains a beloved prayer of the Orthodox faithful to this day.
